Understanding Modem

Modem stands for "Modulator-Demodulator" The modulator is a circuit that serves to perform the modulation process, which is a process of "superimposing" the data on the frequency or carrier signal to the information signal or message to be sent to the receiver through certain intermediaries, such as cable or air media. Usually the waveform sine, the message signal wave is also called modulating the signal. Data from the computer that was formed in the form of a digital signal will be converted into Analog signal.

The demodulator is the reverse function of the modulator (demodulasi), that is a process to get back data or process read data from the signal received from a sender. In the demodulation process, the message signal is separated from the high-frequency carrier signal.

The transmitted data in the form of an Analog signal is converted back into a digital signal to be read on the receiving computer. And Modem is one of the mergings of the two systems, so the modem is a two-way communication tool.

So, Understanding Modem is a hardware that is useful as a two-way communication tool that converts digital signals into analog signals or vice versa to send data/messages to the intended address. The modem can also be interpreted as an intermediary medium so that computers can connect to the internet network.

How Modem Works

In its use, the modem is in charge of changing data in the analog and digital form. When the computer is connected to a telephone cord for later use of the internet, if our computer uploads or transmits data, then information or data from the computer in digital form will be converted by modem to analog form to be sent via telephone cable or other media. When the data or analog information had reached the destination computer, the modem that had been on the destination computer would change the form of the data back (analog) into a digital form so that it can be processed by the destination computer.

Similarly, when we download data or files, the data is analog data while on the phone cable, but when the process of logging into our computer, the modem will instantly also change it into digital form to be displayed. This is what allows computer devices on the internet in different parts of the world can interact with each other.

Modem Function

Modem function is to change the two-way communication from the digital signal to analog signal or vice versa. The digital signal frequency transmitted from the computer is converted to analog signal first by the modem and transmitted through the phone cord to be delivered to another computer and vice versa.

Currently, the modem has also developed technology by adding voice modem facility that can function as a radio channel, telephone conversations, and other audio.

To minimize the level of errors that occur when transmitting a signal, the modem will also check whether the information received is damaged or not by checksum method if damage occurs then the data will be sent back to the place of origin.
